Advising Information

The faculty and staff of the Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering are committed to helping you reach your goals and share responsibility for your success. The resources described below are designed to help ease your academic journey.

The College recognizes the need for the consistency and expertise of professional advisors, in addition to the vital connection between students and faculty members in the discipline-specific arenas. The College supports a dual advising system comprised of faculty mentoring and professional advising. Please see below for a description of advising at the freshman, and sophomore through senior levels.

In addition to the College advising resources, students have access to campus advising resources. Among these are tutoring, disability resources, study skills workshops, etc. Students should become familiar with the advising tools described below, which are indispensable for accessing academic transcripts, course schedule and degree audit information, as well as other university systems.

Freshman Advising

To meet the transitional needs of first year students, freshmen are assigned to both a professional advisor and discipline-specific faculty. The Freshman Program Advisor is the freshman student's first resource for general Engineering and University inquiries, such as:

  • Course sequence
  • College and University policies
  • Registration process, forms, etc.
  • Information related to campus resources

To reach the Freshman Program Advisor, please email engr-advising@rowan.edu or use RSN/Starish, http://www.rowan.edu/rsn, to schedule an advising appointment. The advisor is located in Engineering Hall (REXT) 131.  

Your assigned Faculty Advisor provides information and guidance related to the topics such as, careers in engineering, advanced studies, course content, industry, and other discipline-specific topics.

Sophomore through Senior Advising

Beginning in sophomore year, students rely on the expertise of faculty to provide guidance on discipline-specific coursework that relates to career goals. Faculty provide information on career planning, preparation for graduate study, employment, internships and work experience in the field.

The name of your faculty advisor can be found by accessing your GRAD report through Banner Self-Service (www.rowan.edu/selfservice), or by contacting your department secretary.

Curriculum/Academic Planning

Our programs of study in Biomedical, Chemical, Civil & Environmental, Electrical & Computer, Engineering Entrepreneurship, and Mechanical Engineering follow a structured program of study. The curriculum is rounded out by general education electives (class entering F'17 or prior), or Rowan Core (class entering F'18 and beyond) electives that meet the University's requirements. Students are urged to follow the prescribed sequence of courses within their major. Additional discipline-specific information is found on the department webpage for your major. Any deviations from your course of study must have the approval of your department chair, and should be made in consultation with your faculty advisor.

Guidelines for General Education/Rowan Core Requirements

All Engineering majors are required to fulfill the General Education/Rowan Experience or Rowan Core/Rowan Experience general education model. Math, Science and Communications requirements are  satisfied from required courses in the typical Engineering curriculum. Please see below for description and requirements.

Rowan Core Model - applies to freshmen entering Fall 2018 and beyond. 

Rowan General Education - applies to students who entered in Fall 2017 and prior.

 

Engineering Minors

Engineering minors are restricted and typically require between 18-19 credits of coursework.  Students interested in an engineering minor should consult with the head of the department of relevant minor. Students are required to have a minimum GPA of 3.0.

General Information

  • Students may take up to 18 credits without prior approval. Credits above 18 must be approved by the department chair or faculty advisor. Tuition ramifications: Full-time flat rate tuition covers 12-17 credits.  Credits above 17 will be charged at the per credit tuition rate.
  • Students on scholarship are required to maintain a GPA of 3.0 to remain on scholarship.
  • The College follows the University's academic standing policy, which states that students falling below a 2.0 GPA at the end of the spring term will be on academic probation.

Campus Resources

  • Rowan Success Network (RSN) www.rowan.edu/rsn - RSN gives you an easy way to schedule the dedicated time you need with your advisors and professors. RSN also makes it easy to access campus support resources such as tutoring.
  • Graduation Requirements and Advising Database (GRAD) - This system is a very useful advising tool for our undergraduate students
  • Academic Success Center - oversees an array of services geared toward helping students achieve academic success. Workshops are offered regularly covering topics such as: time management, study strategies, communications, learning styles, etc. For more information, www.rowan.edu/studentaffairs/asc.
  • Disability Resources - provides accommodations and assistance to students with various documented disabilities. Appropriate documention is required to determine eligibility.
  • Tutoring Center is available free of charge to all Rowan students. Students may schedule tutoring appointments by using RSN.
  • Testing Services - provides testing accommodations to students registered with the Office of Disability Resources (see above).
