The research in the NIE lab is revolved around Soft Matter-, Colloid- and Interface Science. We use techniques such as nanoparticle self-assembly, polymer synthesis or liquid-liquid phase separation to fabricate nano- or microcapsules, separation membranes and catalytic microreactors. We then test the performance of these materials for applications like drug delivery, anti-corrosive coatings, water treatment, gas separation, green chemistry, biofuel synthesis and liquid-liquid extraction. This diagram gives you an overview about our activities. You can learn more about to the individual sections by clicking on the navigation bar above.

Our research interests lie at the interface of catalysis, biology, and micro- and nano- engineering technologies. Overall, our research focus on three main areas including:

  • Synthesis of biobased chemicals and pharmaceuticals using heterogeneous catalysts in microreactor arrays
  • Integration of catalytic and biocatalytic processes to produce chemicals and biochemicals
  • Development of novel biomaterials for fabrication of biomedical devises and flexible electronics

The Sustainable Materials Research Laboratory (SMRL) at Rowan University is dedicated to advancing fundamental and applied science and engineering technology related to materials research. Our goal is to utilize nature’s chemistries, both those renewed on an annual basis by the biosphere and those nature has provided us in the form of fossil reserves, to enhance material performance and improve our global sustainability.
