Rowan’s College of Education joins consortium for the Carnegie Project on the Education Doctorate

Rowan University’s College of Education was recently accepted as a new member of the Carnegie Project on the Education Doctorate (CPED). Headquartered at the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Education, CPED is both a collaborative effort to promote excellence for the educational doctorate (Ed.D.) and a design-based research project. Rowan will join 21 other new institutions and 80 existing members committed to learning together and engaging in a process of innovation. “CPED is prestigious and selective. Being accepted is a mark of distinction for Rowan University,” explains Associate Professor Monica Reid Kerrigan. “This greatly benefits our Ed.D. program because we will now have the opportunity to learn and grow through collaboration with the other CPED member institutions.  We are now part of a community focused on studying and improving practice, which will allow us to make our already strong program even stronger and more rigorous.” Through involvement in CPED, Rowan’s faculty will work with consortium members as they together explore ways to continue to improve Ed.D. programs.  “CPED is focused on innovation, improvement, and collaboration--always with a focus on rigorous improvement for practice,” says MaryBeth Walpole, professor and chair of Rowan’s Department of Educational Services and Leadership. “It connects us with other programs similarly focused on rigorous approaches to practice.” Adds Kerrigan:  “We will be engaged in the effort to reclaim and distinguish the Ed.D. from the doctor of philosophy, emphasizing that the Ed.D. is more practically oriented, applied in nature, but no less rigorous than the Ph.D.” Offered since 1997, the Doctor of Educational Leadership program was Rowan's first doctoral program. Students are educated to become reflective practitioners who not only understand and evaluate professional research and literature, but also learn how to translate research and theory into practice in order to transform educational institutions to meet society’s challenging needs. The program offers tracks in Higher Education, P-12, Nurse Educator and a Community College Leadership Initiative.  Depending on the track, the program is offered as a hybrid, online, or in a blended format. 


Representatives of Rowan’s College of Education took part in the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education’s (AACTE) 2017 Washington Week

Dr. Monika Williams Shealey, Dean of Rowan University’s College of Education (COE), and four COE Ph.D. students joined attendees from across the nation to discuss important education policies and advocate for educator preparation. Washington Week, which took place from June 4 through June 7 with a theme of “Diverse Perspectives, Deep Partnerships, One Profession,” was comprised of three events: Day on the Hill, State Leaders Institute, and the Holmes Summer Policy Institute.  

During Day on the Hill, Dr. Shealey and the students- Janelle Alexander, Charles Barnes, Kelly Gilpin, and Benita Kluttz-Drye- visited the offices of New Jersey state legislators to discuss issues in public education and share information about the COE’s current programs. The group met with representatives from the offices of Senator Robert Menendez, Senator Cory Booker, Representative Donald Norcross, and Representative Frank LoBiondo.

“Day on the Hill was not only an opportunity for Rowan University's COE and Holmes Scholars to engage our congressional delegation about the importance having their support for quality teacher preparation programs. But, more importantly, to garner and foster a partnership with them to ensure that every new educator is profession ready as they enter the classroom,” explains student Charles Barnes. “This partnership will not only be an improvement for the educational profession, but it will improve the quality and quantity of future educators.”

As members of the AACTE Holmes Scholars program, all four of the Ph.D. students took part in the Holmes Summer Policy Institute. The one day program gave attendees insight into the world of education policy and the impact of current policy on research and programming focused on minority populations. The Holmes Scholars program provides support, mentorship, and research guidance to students from historically underrepresented backgrounds.

 “Washington Week is an opportunity for our college to engage in advocacy of teacher preparation and for our Holmes Scholars to learn more about the role of advocacy in teacher preparation, as well as connect with other Scholars from across the country,” Dr. Shealey notes. “In our meetings with legislators we share the work of the College of Education in the areas of research, innovation, and community engagement.”

SJ Magazine's Women of Excellence Awards Reception - Dr. Monika Shealey

Dr. Shealey, Dean of Rowan University’s College of Education, was one of six accomplished women who were honored on June 12th at SJ Magazine’s Women of Excellence Awards Reception. On being selected as the 2017 Game Changer, Dean Shealey stated, “I feel that’s what the Game Changer Award is about. It’s about understanding the context, the landscape in which you are working, but being a visionary as well. This award means the world to me, not just for me, but it acknowledges our entire College of Education and our contributions.” Dean Shealey hopes young women will be inspired and motivated by her example. “I hope that any young woman who sees me, sees my strength, sees my determination, and my commitment. I hope they see themselves in me. I hope they see what they could be and know there is nothing they can’t accomplish and education is the door that opens all of those possibilities.”
