Larry Butler, Associate Dean

Dr. Larry Butler has served as the Associate Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences since its founding in 2012 and has been a member of the political science faculty at Rowan since 2001, rising to the rank of Full Professor. He previously served for five years as Department Chair, first of the Department of Political Science and then of the Department of Political Science and Economics. Before coming to Rowan, he taught for a year at the University of Richmond as a Visiting Instructor of Political Science.

Dr. Butler has a Ph.D. in Politics from Princeton University, specializing in American political institutions and elections, an M.A. in Economics from George Mason University, and a B.A. in Economics from Washington and Lee University. His research focuses on party leadership in Congress and on presidential elections. More particularly, he studies how political actors reshape political rules and norms to advance their agendas.  He has taught courses on the Presidency, Congress, parties and elections, and research methods. Prior to his academic career, he worked as an economic analyst for various federal government agencies, working primarily on international trade issues.
